Voles: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- A vole looks like a mouse, but its muzzle is more blunt and rounded, tail is shorter and ears are smaller.
- Voles are compact rodents with stocky bodies, short legs, and short tails
- Generally they are 5-7 inches in total length from nose to tip of tail
Active Season
- Voles are active day and night year-round, as they do not hibernate
- Most girdling (damage to trees) damage usually occurs in fall and winter
Interesting Facts
- Voles are excellent swimmers. They have also been known to use their diving skills in water to escape potential predators
Cause for Concern
- Voles eat crops and also damage them when they build extensive runway and tunnel systems.
- Voles may cause serious damage to orchards, ornamentals, and tree plantings due to their girdling of seedlings, as well as mature trees
Town and Country Can Help
Our Recommendation
- In most circumstances, Town & Country does not apply a Vole treatment. Generally we would suggest to purchase Liquid Fence for Voles from your local garden store. It is very easy to use, and we have seen positive results when applied regularly. Please feel free to call us with any questions
