Ticks: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Ticks can vary in size from ⅛ – ½ inches in length
- The Brown Dog Tick is the most common tick one will find (mainly by dog owners); they are red-brown and gray, but other types can vary widely in color
- They feed on warm blooded creatures and will irritate skin, causing itching
Active Season
- Ticks are most active during the Spring and Summer
Interesting Facts
- Ticks cannot move fast, jump or fly but instead they will wait for a host by hanging on a leaf or grass blade hoping to latch on when a potential host walks by
- They generally do not lay eggs on their host, but instead drop to the ground to lay eggs in a protected area
Cause for Concern
- Along with causing skin irritation, Ticks can transmit diseases, such as lyme disease, which can prove to be lethal to humans and pets
