Skunks: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Skunks are generally about the size of a house cat
- They produce a foul smell that will often be noticed before the skunk itself
- They are mostly black with white stripes
- They tend to be most active at night
Active Season
- Skunks birthing seasons are early Summer and early Fall
- They can have up to 10 kits (baby skunk) in a litter
- Generally they are inactive during winter months
Interesting Facts
- A Skunk can accurately shoot its odorous spray up to 10 feet and less accurately up to 20 feet
- Their diets consists of insects, grubs and small rodents
Cause for Concern
- Skunks will dig holes in yards causing damage to property
- Their spray can be a nuisance to humans or pets, but they generally are not physically aggressive
