Silverfish: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Adult Silverfish are approximately ½ inch in length
- They have a flattened body and have a silver coloring all throughout their entire bodies
- They have long antennae and 3 bristletails (tail-like filament extending from their last segment)
Active Season
- Silverfish prefer temperatures of 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit with at least 75% humidity
- They can survive year-round indoors

- Silverfish received their name from their appearance and style of movement
- They feed on a wide variety of food sources (starches, sugars, organic material, proteins and carbohydrates)
Cause for Concern
- Due to their diet Silverfish can cause damage to stored items such as books and papers as well as stored food items such as flour and oats
