Rats: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Rats are generally no more than 13 inches in length from nose to end of tail
- They are typically brown or gray, have small ears, and their tails are semi-naked
- Their average territory is a 130 foot radius from nest
Active Season
- Rats peak season is during the spring and fall
- A female rat can have 4-7 litters per year, with 8-12 kittens/pups per litter
- A wild rat generally lives 5-12 months
Interesting Facts
- A Rat can fall as far as 50 feet and land uninjured
- There is approximately one rat per person in the United States
- Rats’ front teeth grow 4½ to 5½ inches each a year, but they wear them down by continuously gnawing on everything around them, including cement, brick, wood, lead and pipes
