Raccoons: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- A Raccoon is 2 to 4 feet in length (nose to tail)
- They are most recognized by the dark fur around their eyes that resembles a mask
- Finding your garbage raided after being left outside is often a sign of Raccoon activity
- Another sign of raccoon activity is hearing noises in an attic or chimney (most likely places they will nest at a residence)
- They are most active at night
Active Season
- Raccoons generally become inactive by late October, only re-emerging for the mating season that begins in January
- They usually give birth around April or May
- There are 3 to 6 cubs in a litter, who will be on their own after the first year
Interesting Facts
- Pillbugs are actually a crustacean; more related to a crayfish than to insects
Cause for Concern
- Raccoons can fit through surprisingly small openings only 2½ x 4 inches
- They are more likely to be killed by an automobile than by another predator
- They have been clocked running at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour
