Citronella Ants : What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Adult Citronella Ants can measure 1/4 – 1/2 inches in length
- Tend to be light shades of brown, yellow or red and winged
- Found generally in damp moist areas
- Infestations seem to occur overnight due to their tendency to swarm
Active Season
- May be active year round depending on environment but typically only seen during their swarming season
- Swarming/mating season generally takes place in springtime
Interesting Facts
- These ants give off a citronella oil or lemony scent from which they receive their name
- Tend to be outdoor insects but can be found in basements or buildings set on concrete slabs under which they create their nests
