Identifying Characteristics
- Adult Cockroaches range in size from ½ – 1½ inches in length
- They are light or dark brown in color
- Normally only active at night when not confronted with stress factors such pesticides and overpopulation
- Their excrement stains can be easily found in areas of higher activity
Active Season
- A female Cockroach will produce an egg capsule consisting of 2 rows of eggs (eggs per capsule range with species)
- Their peak season is late Spring through early Summer, but are seen all throughout the year
Interesting Facts
- A female Cockroach can produce up to 400 spawn in a lifetime
- A single Cockroach and its offspring can multiply to 300,000 in a single year
- They all have wings but most house-infesting never use them
Cause for Concern
- Cockroaches contaminate much more food than they eat
- When they defecate or shed they present allergens or allergy developing bacteria; children are especially susceptible
- They give off a pheromone that is foul or pungent and can even spoil food
