Box Elder Beetles : What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Box Elder Beetles measure ½ inch in length
- They can be red or black with orange-red bands on the back
- Found mainly on box elder trees but have been known to be seen on other trees such as maple
- Generally seen in large populations, and can infest siding or windows
Active Season
- Box Elder Beetles are active from Summer through Fall
- They can be found inside overwintering during the cold months
Interesting Facts
- Box Elders are sometimes mistakenly referred to as Stink Bugs
- In cooler months they may be found on heavily sunned surfaces
Cause for Concern
- When Box Elder Beetles swarm it can be alarming
- If inside they may stain curtains with their excretions or feces
- They have been known to bite causing slight irritation
