Identifying Characteristics
- Starlings generally measure from 7½ – 9⅛ inches in length, with a wingspan from 12 – 17 inches, and a weight of 58 – 101 grams
- They have glossy black plumage with an iridescent green or purple sheen, black eyes and a long pointy bill
- They have a short squared tail and form a triangular shape in flight
Active Season
- In late summer and fall, Starlings form large flocks and roost in large deciduous trees
- In early winter, when trees lose their leaves, they roost in areas that provide protection from wind and cold
Interesting Facts
- Starlings can enter a round hole as small as 1⅝ inches in diameter
- Their bill turns yellow during breeding season and their plumage develops white spots during the winter
