Termites: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- The look of a Termite appears very similar to that of an ant, except their bodies are less segmented and they have a wider waist
- Specific size depends on species, and vary in lengths comparable to ants
- They are mostly light tan to almost transparent
Active Season
- Termites are swarmers and reproductives which tend to emerge in springtime
- The queen is not the only reproductive member in the nest
- In ideal environments they will remain active throughout the year, and will indefinitely reproduce
Interesting Facts
- A Termite nest consists of both a king and queen
- Unlike many wood destroying insects, termites do actually ingest wood
- Due to their swarming habits, people are most likely to see reproductive termites
Cause for Concern
- Termites can easily compromise the integrity of a wooden home or building
