Sweet Ants: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Adult Pavement Ants can measure ⅛-⅙ inches in length (smaller than a grain of rice)
- Typically brown with black/grey abdomens and semi-transparent legs
- Most often found feeding on sugary or greasy foods
- Will likely be seen coming in and out of cracks in pavement, tile, or any indoor/outdoor flooring.
Active Season
- In the proper environment, Pavement Ants may be active year round (specifically indoors)
- Queen ants will continue producing eggs throughout the year
Interesting Facts
- When nesting, they may battle another colony if it encroaches on their territory
- Pavement Ants receive their name because they are often found in between cracks in the pavement or cement
- During warmer seasons they will clear out the sand in the cracks of the pavement to ventilate their nests
Cause for Concern
- A major infestation can weaken slabs and lead to cracks and settling
- Mainly a nuisance to people when found foraging for food in kitchens and at picnics
