Chipmunks : What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Chipmunks are small brown ground dwelling squirrels and are generally 5-6 inches in length from nose to tail and weigh 2-4 ounces
- They have two pale and five dark gray to black longitudinal stripes on their back
Active Season
- Chipmunks have two breeding seasons; one from February to April and the other from June to August
- During the winter chipmunks may enter long periods of torpor (a state of physical or mental inactivity), but they do not truly hibernate
Interesting Facts
- Chipmunks have pouches inside of their cheeks in which they store food when foraging
Cause for Concern
- The burrowing activity of Chipmunks can cause significant structural damage by undermining foundations, concrete patios and steps, retaining walls and sidewalks.
- They may also be destructive to gardens when they dig up and eat bulbs and seeds or attack garden fruits
