Carpenter Ants : What you need to know

  • Adult Carpenter Ants can measure ½-¾ inches in length (larger than a grain of rice)
  • Typically black but can be found partially colored with grey or red
  • Nests are generally located in moist or rotting wood
  • Generally have prominent mandibles/pincers
  • Small sawdust piles may be found near the entrance of their colonies
  • Depending on environment, active nests may be seen all year
  • Mating/Swarming season is in early spring
  • Ants can eat pretty much any type of food but are unable to digest cellulose
  • Opposed to Termites, Carpenter Ants do not actually eat wood
  • The queen ant will live and continue laying eggs for up to 28 years!
  • Carpenter Ants can cause structural damage to your house by making tunnels in wood for their homes
  • Ants living in the wood in your home can attract predators such as woodpeckers which will do extreme damage to wood in attempts to find and eat insects
  • Consistently seeing ants in your home, especially in colder seasons, is a typical sign of an active nest in your home
