Bumble Bees : What you need to know

  • Bumble Bees measure between ½  to ⅞ inches in length
  • They are a hairy, social bee and usually black and yellow
  • They very closely resemble Honey Bees but are significantly larger
  • Their nests are usually found in dry dark cavities or underground
  • Bumble Bees are most active during their mating season in Spring and early Summer
  • They remain active throughout the Summer and into the Fall
  • Fifty species of Bumble Bees are known in North America
  • Bumble Bee wings can beat as many as 240 times per second
  • They can visit up to 6,000 flowers in a day
  • While Bumble Bees will not damage brick work or wood, they do have a painful sting
