Identifying Characteristics
- Every spider has 8 legs
- Their bodies are always separated into two distinct parts
- They are mostly found in areas that are moist, though some prefer dry areas
Active Season
- Spider eggs are laid in a mass, up to 3,000 at a time
- Peak seasons are Spring through Fall, but can be seen indoors year-round
- Spiders feed on smaller insects, so naturally they are more prevalent when insects are most active, which is during warmer months
Interesting Facts
- After mating the female tends to kill and eat the male. This is mutual, because it ensures the females healthy gestation
- They breathe through a pair of respiratory organs composed of many fine leaves situated in the abdomen, called book lungs
- Spiders are known as “nature’s exterminators” because they prey on many insects that people generally dislike (flies, mosquitoes, etc.)
Cause for Concern
- Some spiders do bite but this is irregular and generally are only minor bites and are not dangerous
- Most people find spiders unsightly and do not enjoy having them around, especially indoors
